Supporting inclusion, dignity, and opportunity
At Mbakunda Development Initiative (MDI), we recognize that young people and women are central to community development, yet they often face barriers that limit their participation, access to opportunities, and ability to influence change. Our Youth & Women Support focus area is dedicated to addressing these challenges by creating pathways for empowerment, inclusion, and growth.
We work to strengthen the voice, confidence, and capacity of youth and women so that they can participate meaningfully in social, economic, and community life. Our goal is not only to support them in overcoming immediate barriers, but also to help build an environment where they can lead, contribute, and thrive.
Our approach to youth and women support
Our approach is rooted in inclusion, respect, and practical empowerment. We understand that young people and women experience unique challenges that require thoughtful and context-sensitive responses. For this reason, we work closely with communities to identify the specific needs, opportunities, and barriers affecting these groups.
We seek to create safe and supportive spaces where youth and women can build skills, access opportunities, express their ideas, and strengthen their role within the community. We also recognize the importance of engaging families, community leaders, and institutions in building environments that support their participation and growth.
Key areas of intervention
Our youth and women support initiatives typically include:
- Capacity building and life skills development
- Mentorship and leadership development
- Support for participation in community initiatives
- Promotion of confidence, voice, and agency
- Access to opportunities for learning, livelihoods, and social inclusion
These interventions are designed to help youth and women move from the margins to active participation in shaping their own futures and contributing to community development.
What we aim to achieve
Through this focus area, we aim to:
- Strengthen the confidence and leadership potential of youth and women
- Increase participation in community and development activities
- Improve access to opportunities for learning and growth
- Support inclusion and reduce social and economic barriers
- Promote dignity, self-reliance, and agency among vulnerable groups
Why youth and women support matters
Communities are stronger when all members are able to participate and contribute. Supporting youth and women is not only a matter of inclusion, but also a strategic investment in the future of families and communities.
When young people and women are empowered, communities benefit from stronger leadership, improved livelihoods, greater social cohesion, and more sustainable development outcomes.
Link to other focus areas
Youth and women support is closely connected to our work in livelihoods and skills, community empowerment, and sustainable development. Empowered youth and women are better positioned to participate in economic activities, engage in local leadership, and contribute to community resilience and long-term progress.
